Unclutterer Your Office

I love the idea of an uncluttered office.  I even knew a guy who kept his office spotless because his theory was that people with clean offices climbed the ladder faster.  He offered no data to back up his theory, but it seemed to work for him.

Check out this at-home office set-up featured on Unclutterer.  I love that the desk acts as book shelf, trophy case, and desk.  The guy also has speakers mounted behind his chair.

Pablo Moix's La Descarga Daiquiri

A couple months ago I wrote a post about the rum bar La Descarga.

The LA Times blog Cocktail Confidential has posted Pablo Moix's recipe for La Descarga's Daiquiri.

Here it is:

La Descarga Daiquiri
2 ounces Ron Diplomático añejo rum
1 ounce fresh lime juice
2 bar spoons baker’s sugar
Fresh lime for garnish
Add all ingredients into a cocktail shaker. Shake vigorously. Strain into a cocktail coupe and garnish with a thin lime wheel.

Staying Healthy While Working

"I was pretty health conscious my whole life.  Then I entered law school.  Then I started practicing.  That's when I started packing on the pounds/feeling sluggish/feeling like crap."
This scenario seems pretty common for California attorneys, but maybe you weren't ever really healthy, and practice has just made you unhealthier.  Whatever the case, it seems common to hear, "I remembered that I began to gain weight when I first started practicing."  I'll sum up the problem with this simple equation:

long hours + little to no exercise + too much take out = weight gain

It's easy to fall into an unhealthy slump.  All it takes is a taqueria (or insert other unhealthy food purveyor here) near your office, so whenever it looks like you'll be pulling another late night, you'll skip down there and grab a to-go box of tacos con carne asada plus some taquitos for good measure and BAM...insert weight gain equation here.

Unhealthy Food Scenarios
  • Your boss insists on taking your team out to eat, so you feel obligated to go, but you always end up at a restaurant serving rich, butter filled / lard filled food
  • You go to a mediation, and the mediator's office serves pizza and a heavy creme pasta with a side of potatoes and bread.  You have your options of soda and coffee.  You don't really have time to sneak away for a sit down meal and there's only fast food nearby
  • That court reporter's office always has freshly baked cookies which you seem to consume more of the more the deponent talks
  • Happy hour with your colleagues
  • Marketing trip ('nuff said)

Minimize the Unhealthy Food in Your Life: while it may be impossible (or unpalatable) to eliminate unhealthy food from your diet, the goal is to minimize it without hindering your career.
  • Don't skip that lunch with your boss or your team.  Instead order the healthier option or ask the chef to prepare the food differently.  e.g., I know an attorney who always asks that his vegetables be steamed rather than cooked in butter.  Most restaurants also have the chicken salad with light vinaigrette option. Consider the unfried fish option.
  • Arrange to eat at a healthier place with your colleagues (e.g., Wholefoods)
  • Plan ahead.  Either pack your lunch or bring a healthy snack and eat less of the unhealthy stuff.  Oh, and vegetables slathered in high-fat dressing are not healthy.  You have to deal with enough BS already; don't feed yourself more BS.
  • If you have an important marketing trip coming up where you anticipate having to eat out the entire time, consider eating extra healthy in the time leading up to the trip.
Hindrances to Exercise
  • Working all the time/unpredictable schedule
  • Fatigue
  • Laziness
  • Gym aversion: it's smelly, it's a hard-body exhibition, self-consciousness
Practical Ways to Get Moving
  • Exercise TV has free exercise videos available online at varying levels of difficulty.  Most of the videos require little more equipment than some free weights and a mat.  They have everything from kickboxing to body sculpting to yoga.
  • Take the stairs
  • Hike with your partner
  • Walk to the grocery store.  You'll get some weight resistance when you carry your groceries home.
  • High school / middle school tracks are a free outdoor gym.  Run up and down the bleachers or around the track.
  • Jog on the sand
  • Get an exercise buddy
Hopefully you'll have some time this weekend to enjoy the outdoors and to exercise.

Be persistent and be creative!  Good luck.

The People's Therapist on Getting a Job and Marketing Yourself

Will Meyerhofer, JD LMSW is a psychotherapist in private practice in Lower Manhattan, in New York City.  Meyerhofer's unusual pedigree allows him to write from a unique point of view resulting in an interesting and thought provoking blog on the legal profession and your feelings about it.  His blog is The People's Therapist, and he has been writing a short series in collaboration with Above the Law.  The entire series is worth a read.

In the second installment of the series simply titled Get a Job, Meyerhofer sensitively deals with the issues of finding employment and keeping your spirits up while doing so.

Meyerhofer writes:
"Right now a lot of lawyers aren’t at the office.
They’re at home, out of work.
Unemployment is tough on lawyers because they tend to be pleasers – they have to be, to earn the grades to make it into law school.

The Vendy Awards are Coming to LA May 15th

Mark your calendars, LA residents, because the Vendy awards are coming to town!  For anyone who loves street eats, this is the place to be.  The Vendy Awards will be a food truck gathering and "cook off" in MacArthur Park on May 15.  The awards will determine the best street food vendor in Los Angeles while raising money to protect vendors' rights.  Tickets are $50 per person and can be purchased here.  Your ticket will buy you admission and food from all the finalists including beer, wine, and soda.  Tickets are tax-deductible.

The public voted on who would make it to the finals.  See the finalists here.  I have to admit I'm surprised at the finalists...not a single Korean taco truck?  What's up with that?

Don't want to limit yourself to the above finalists?
Check out Yelp's Keep on Truckin' page for a list of the top rated food trucks in Los Angeles.  Check out The Buttermilk truck, a breakfast truck that velvet pancakes...Get Shaved, a shaved ice truck...and The Grilled Cheese truck.
